General Education Pre-Proposal Process

Please read the following information carefully before beginning your request

Important Information

This form is a pre-proposal and is intended solely for preliminary review by the appropriate governing bodies. Submission of this form does not constitute an official request to create a new course, obtain a General Education designation, or modify an existing General Education course. As applicable, separate New Course, General Education, and/or Course Modification requests must be submitted through the approval system. To allow sufficient time for course creation, course numbering, and the required review and approval processes, these requests should be initiated as soon as possible and should not be delayed pending the outcome of this pre-proposal review. Courses will not be created, receive a General Education designation, or have proposed modifications to an existing General Education designation implemented until the applicable request(s) have been submitted through the approval system.

This information pertains to General Education designations other than International

Requests seeking approval for the following General Education (Gen Ed.) designations are subject to state requirements and review standards established under Florida Statutes 1007.25 and 1007.55:

  • B – Biological Sciences
  • P – Physical Sciences
  • C – Composition
  • H – Humanities
  • S – Social and Behavioral Sciences
  • M – Mathematics

In accordance with these Florida Statutes, courses proposed for these Gen Ed. designations must meet the applicable statewide General Education requirements (which can be found at the links above).

Additionally, Florida Statute 1007.55 requires that approved and proposed General Education courses be submitted annually through the Articulation Coordinating Committee to the State Board of Education and the Board of Governors for review and approval. The University of Florida Office of the Provost facilitates and coordinates this review and approval process through this form.

If a new Gen Ed. designation is approved by the Florida Board of Governors (BOG), it will not take effect until the academic year following the upcoming academic year. For example, if approval occurs during the 2026–2027 academic year, the designation would go into effect in the 2028–2029 academic year.

Please note: Submission of a request for a General Education designation does not guarantee approval. Courses are subject to review by the appropriate state governing bodies and may be denied if they are determined to not meet the requirements and criteria established in Florida Statutes 1007.25 and 1007.55.
