Add or Remove a General Education Designation

Please read the following information carefully before beginning your request

This information pertains to General Education designations other than International

Requests seeking approval for the following General Education (Gen Ed.) designations are subject to state requirements and review standards established under Florida Statutes 1007.25 and 1007.55:

  • B – Biological Sciences
  • P – Physical Sciences
  • C – Composition
  • H – Humanities
  • S – Social and Behavioral Sciences
  • M – Mathematics

In accordance with these Florida Statutes, courses proposed for these Gen Ed. designations must meet the applicable statewide General Education requirements (which can be found at the links above).

Additionally, Florida Statute 1007.55 requires that approved and proposed General Education courses be submitted annually through the Articulation Coordinating Committee to the State Board of Education and the Board of Governors for review and approval. The University of Florida Office of the Provost facilitates and coordinates this review and approval process through this form.

If a new Gen Ed. designation is approved by the Florida Board of Governors (BOG), it will not take effect until the academic year following the upcoming academic year. For example, if approval occurs during the 2026–2027 academic year, the designation would go into effect in the 2028–2029 academic year.

Please note: Submission of a request for a General Education designation does not guarantee approval. Courses are subject to review by the appropriate state governing bodies and may be denied if they are determined to not meet the requirements and criteria established in Florida Statutes 1007.25 and 1007.55.

This information pertains to General Education - International designations

Because completion of an International-designated course is a University graduation requirement, courses seeking the Gen Ed. - International designation must also comply with the general education requirements established in Florida Statute 1007.25.

This information pertains to all Gen Ed. designation requests

A Gen. Ed. designation may only be requested for an existing course (i.e., one that has a permanent course number) that meets the above-described requirements. If the course for which a Gen Ed. designation is being sought has an incomplete request pending in the Academic Approval Tracking system, meaning it is not yet in Approved status, then you should not complete this request until that pending request has been completed.
