Creating an Academic Assessment Plan and Academic Learning Compact
This approval system request allows academic units to submit their Academic Assessment Plan (AAP) and Academic Learning Compact (ALC) for review by the Academic Assessment Committee.
AAPs are an essential component of the University of Florida's curriculum and assessment process for measuring student learning in academic programs, while ALCs identify the knowledge, skills, and abilities students should acquire by completing their major's prescribed course of study.
Each AAP must contain the following components:
- Mission Statement: Defines the program's purpose, core goals, and how it contributes to and advances the university's mission.
- Program Goals (PGs): Broad educational objectives that describe what the program intends for students to achieve or become as a result of completing the program (e.g., graduates who are prepared for the workforce).
- Evaluation Method for Each PG: Describes how achievement of a Program Goal will be evaluated, including the source of evidence and the process used to determine the extent to which the goal is being met.
- Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs): Specify what students should know and be able to do upon completion of the program.
- Assessment Method for Each SLO: Describes the process used to evaluate student achievement of a Student Learning Outcome (SLO). This includes identifying what will be assessed (e.g., an exam, project, clinical performance, portfolio, or presentation) and how performance will be measured.
- Curriculum Map: A matrix that illustrates the courses in which program Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) are introduced, reinforced, and assessed throughout the curriculum. It provides a visual representation of how assessments are distributed across the program.
- Sample Assessment Instrument: An example of the assessment tool used to evaluate student learning. Examples include rubrics, checklists, review forms, exam scoring guides, or other tools used to assess a Student Learning Outcome (SLO).

Process Steps
The academic approval tracking system will automatically route the request (including all accompanying forms and documents) to the following groups for approval and/or notification.
- Department (Approval is required from the Chair or other designated approver for the department that will offer the academic program, typically following review by the department curriculum committee.)
- College (Approval is required from the Dean or other designated approver for the college or unit in the preceding step, typically following review by the college curriculum committee.)
- AAC (Approval is required from the Academic Assessment Committee.)
- CAT (The ALC will be entered into the undergraduate catalog, effective in the term approved for the request.)
- Data Entry – Assessment Software (The assessment plan will be entered into the University’s assessment software)
- College [N] (The College is notified of the request approval)
