A specialization or track is an organized undergraduate curriculum within an undergraduate major. A concentration is an organized curriculum within a graduate or professional major. Both are offered as part of a major and enhance or complement the major in a manner which leads to specific educational or occupational goals.

Use this process to close (terminate) a graduate or interdisciplinary concentration. Do not use this process to close a major or a degree program.

A major is an organized curriculum offered as part or all of a degree program. A major may have the same name as the degree program, but the CIP code is assigned to the degree program. Creation of a major that will not be associated with an existing degree program requires the creation of a new degree program.

Create a new major

Undergraduate or professional

Use this process to create a new major under an existing undergraduate or professional degree program. The major must be reasonably associated with the degree program and share common core courses with any other major(s) in the same degree program.

Graduate

Use this process to create a new major under an existing graduate degree program. The major must be reasonably associated with the degree program and share common core courses with any other major(s) in the same degree program.

Modify a major

Modify the curriculum of a major

Undergraduate or professional

Use this process to modify the required or elective coursework in an undergraduate or professional major, or the eight-semester plan or critical tracking in an undergraduate major. Do not use this process to close (terminate) a major. Note that changing the required credits of a major requires changing the credits of the degree program. Changes to honors criteria for a major do not require approval above the level of the college and therefore need not be submitted using the academic approval tracking system.

Graduate

Use this process to modify the required or elective coursework in a graduate major. Do not use this process to close (terminate) a major. Note that changing the required credits of a major requires changing the credits of the degree program.

Change the total required credits of a major

To change the credits of a major, you must change the credits of the degree program (all majors in a degree program must have the same number of required credits). Go to Change Credits of an Undergraduate/Professional Degree Program or Change Credits for a Graduate Degree Program.

Change the limited access status of a major

Use this process to change the limited access status of an undergraduate major. Do not use this process to propose any other changes to a major.

Close a major

Undergraduate or professional

Note that closing a major in a degree program that consists of only a single major amounts to closing the degree program, which instead must be requested using the process for closing a degree program.

Graduate
